Section 232 Update: What Changed and Why It Matters

There are important changes to Section 232 duties on steel and aluminum that may significantly impact your imports. Updates were published April 2, announced April 3, and became effective April 6, 2026.

What Changed?

Previous (2025–early 2026): 50% duty applied to steel and aluminum imports. Derivative products were taxed only on metal content

New (Effective April 6, 2026): 50% duty still applies to primary metals (Ch. 72, 73, 74, 76). Derivative products are now taxed on the total entered value- not just metal content

Key Exception- If steel + aluminum <15% of total product weight, the product is fully exempt from Section 232 duties.

What to Do

✓ Review your products for metal content vs. total weight

✓ Ensure supplier data is accurate and documented

✓ Analyze classifications against the updated annexes

This is a major shift in how duties are applied- make sure you’re prepared. If you need help evaluating your exposure, CMT is here to support
