What We Hear Most From Commodity Managers and Purchasing Leaders

At CMT, we spend a great deal of time talking with category managers, commodity managers, and purchasing professionals responsible for sourcing high-complexity metal components. While every company has unique challenges, the conversations are remarkably consistent.

The first thing we hear is this: “We are tired of unresponsive suppliers that do not offer value past manufacturing.”

Today’s sourcing environment is too complex for transactional relationships. Buyers want partners that understand the bigger picture, production schedules, engineering collaboration, inventory pressures, freight costs, tariffs, and overall supply chain risk.

Many of our partners tell us they value support that goes far beyond manufacturing. They are looking for suppliers that can help create inventory programs and JIT delivery strategies that improve cash flow, reduce warehouse burden, and positively impact their balance sheet.

We also hear growing concerns around U.S.-based capabilities combined with a strong global network, freight variability, tariff exposure, and regional sourcing risk. Purchasing leaders want supply partners that can offer flexibility, help evaluate freight options, manage landed costs, and proactively navigate global sourcing challenges before they become operational problems.

But the biggest message we hear is about communication.

Commodity managers consistently tell us they need partners that communicate early, bring solutions to challenges, and operate as an extension of their internal team. They want transparency, responsiveness, accountability, and collaboration, not silence when issues arise.

The strongest supplier relationships are no longer built on simply delivering parts. They are built on helping customers reduce risk, improve visibility, and create long-term operational confidence.
